From CAST

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a framework for designing curricula that enable all individuals to gain knowledge, skills, and enthusiasm for learning. UDL provides rich supports for learning and reduces barriers to the curriculum while maintaining high achievement standards for all.

UDL PRINCIPLES OFFER MULTIPLE METHODS OF:

  • Engagement - build upon learner's interests and strengths taps into Affective networks -How students are engaged and motivated. How they are challenged, excited, or interested. These are affective dimensions—the "why" of learning.
  • Representation - provide alternative ways to acquire knowledge and promote learning taps into Recognition Networks - Gathering facts. How we identify and categorize what we see, hear, and read. Identifying letters, words, or an author's style are recognition tasks—the "what" of learning.
  • Expression - offer additional ways for students to demonstrate what they know taps in Strategic network - Planning and performing tasks. How we organize and express our ideas. Writing an essay or solving a math problem are strategic tasks—the "how" of learning.

UDL Guidelines

WHERE IS THE DISABILITY? When considering the curriuculum, change the questions from, "What can't this student do?" and "Why can't the student do this?" (blaming the student) to "What barriers will the student encounter when participating in this unit or lesson?" (blaming the curriculum).
